Evolution Korea

In the past, Korea’s scientific community has refrained from engaging with the creationists in fear that it could increase the credibility of the movement. The silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate content from textbooks that discuss evolution, www.Evolutionkr.kr including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird’s ancestor. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the change in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which may lead to variations in genes or entire genomes. Over time the changes could result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. As time passes, this difference in reproduction can result in the creation of completely new species.

The word “evolution” comes from the Latin word meaning unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took form in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather), believed that existing species changed into other species in a planned manner. The term”transmutation” was coined by Lamarck’s student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy’s student to describe the idea that existing species change into different species in a gradual and predictable way.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living things develop characteristics to improve their chances of surviving or producing offspring. Over time, genetic variability can lead a population to develop new physical traits or biological functions. The variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary change. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution since they’re not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to claim that it shouldn’t be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high-school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any mention of the evolutionary roots of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestral bird’s parent.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?

Evolution explains how Earth and all its living creatures came into existence. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and aids scientists discover how living things operate and grow. Evolution also reveals the relationships between species. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries such as new drugs.

The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe as well as life on this planet, and it has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over a long period of time. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs since it only deals with physical objects, events and processes.

In reality many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolutionary theory. For instance some Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestral lineage with other animals.

It is essential that science educators stand up for teaching evolution. In some countries, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the elimination of textbook content about the evolution of horses and the avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

While these are disturbing developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief vary. Some scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions, such as developing medicines and other treatments, while others are driven by the desire to improve the lives of animals and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, whereas still others have a deep religious belief in God and seek to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe the Bible is God’s word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists are generally divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The YECs are the best known type of creationist, and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation was true and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs aren’t as popular however their beliefs are just as intense as the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is an untruth.

Both types of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution isn’t possible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their position “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes called “continuous creationism” or “evolution from created kinds.” This theory states that God creates the original species and then allows these to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, called the Great Flood. These creationists hold that all species were created at the same moment and then gradually evolved. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this effort. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin’s notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to clear the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” which paints an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear but could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.

On August 6 and 7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR’s John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
